When I first saw a picture of a chocolate peanut butter cup in a keto blog, I thought that person that posted it had screwed up. I thought they posted their “sweet, delicious recipe” in the wrong post. They posted it in keto, instead of the fattening, but delicious treats post. I mean, a diet that focuses on fat loss can’t possibly include one of my favourite treats. Not a chance. Diets don’t work that way. Diets are about lean chicken instead of fatty beef and bacon is a definite no – no. And peanut butter cups are for cheat days. They are for days when you have given up on the diet, and feel that you need a treat. They are a reward that you will need to pay back later with more cardio, or some more celery and carrots for dinner.

As a self proclaimed “chocoholic”, it is perhaps my greatest weakness. I’ve seen posts with Peppermint Patty recipes, buttery caramel posts, and even chocolate cake. All of these are posted as “fat bombs”. Yeah, fat bombs, meaning tasty morsels that will make us fat and will put us back on the yo-yo diets.

But NO. You see, I was wrong. I know from Mark Sisson’s book Keto Diet, that fat is a necessary part of the ketogenic diet and way of eating. But I thought that meant that I could eat a little bacon, use some coconut oil in my eggs, and put a little butter in my coffee and tea. But now, I find out that fat bombs are a useful and essential part of a keto eating plan. They are actually encouraged and necessary for fat loss, not fat gain. Well that is proof that there is a God looking after us. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

How do Fat Bombs Work For Losing Fat?

Let’s get into the details first of why eating fat is actually good for you. I will go high level on this quickly, because I know you want to get to these great recipes. And to get into a lot more detail about it, you can hear from the experts in my previous post, 7 Keto Geniuses You Need To Follow To Lose Weight. You body is designed to be a fat burning machine, if you feed it foods that it was originally designed to eat. The same way that your car works a lot better when you feed in gas instead of water.

You see, our bodied weren’t designed to eat wheat flour and starchy carbs. Hundreds of years ago wheat and corn became a necessity in order to feed ourselves when there was a shortage of food, and eventually became a mainstay of our diet. Today our lifestyles are much different. The food is highly processed, and we spend a lot more time behind a desk. For these reasons, we need to eat much better to remain healthy.

It used to be that we would fatten up because we knew that there would be a time that food would be scarce and our bodies would need this fat storage for energy. Today, we rarely go a day without food. In fact, most days we have at least 3 full meals and some snacks in between. The fat stores are growing, and growing.

When we cut the carbs, and eat more fibrous carbs like vegetables, along with protein and fat, the body starts looking for energy from other parts of the body. With a ketogenic diet, you are eating less than 50g of carbs per day, relying more on protein and fat for energy. The problem for many is finding ways to incorporate fat into their diet. Especially when most of us have been brainwashed to eat “fat free” or “fat reduced”. You can only add butter to so many things.

The goal is to put your body in ketosis, where it bypasses the energy in your diet, since there isn’t enough sugar and carbs to use for energy, and uses the glucose that is stored in fat cells. How do you know if you are in ketosis? If you are losing weight quickly, than you know you are in ketosis. A more scientific way is to use Ketone Test Strips that will indicate if you are in ketosis.

Remember that although they taste sinful, they are actually helping to melt the fat away. When you are eating them, you will feel guilty, but you really don’t need to!
